What is a deadbolt?
A deadbolt is a lock with a solid bolt that extends into the door frame when you turn the key or thumb-turn. Unlike a spring latch, it stays put when pushed, so it resists prying and shimming.
Single or double cylinder?
A single-cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a thumb-turn inside. It's the most common type and lets you leave quickly in an emergency. A double-cylinder deadbolt needs a key on both sides, which can help next to glass panels but slows escape in a fire. Check local building and fire codes before fitting one on a door used as an exit.
Look at the quality grade
Many deadbolts carry an ANSI/BHMA grade. Grade 1 is the toughest, Grade 2 is solid residential quality and Grade 3 is basic. For an exterior door, Grade 1 or 2 is a sensible choice.
The strike plate matters as much as the lock
A strong bolt is only as good as what it locks into. A reinforced strike plate fixed with long screws that reach into the wall framing makes a door much harder to kick in. This is an inexpensive upgrade worth doing at the same time.
Smart deadbolts
Keypad and app-controlled deadbolts add convenience: no keys to lose and codes you can change. Choose one with a keyed backup and replace batteries on schedule.
